Dunblane Hydro,  Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th October 2006            Dr Nicole Ruysschaert. M.D. Psychiatrist on Self Hypnosis as a Creative Solution to stress.

(Self) Hypnosis is an interesting and effective way to help people suffering from stress and some stress related diseases, matching with contemporary requests for self-efficacy and  control in therapy. Moreover it’s a natural approach preferred by many people. In the  workshop we start by reviewing different stress-models, neurobiological aspects of the  stress reaction and concepts as allostatic load and ill-health aspects of stress. Throughout the training you learn how you can affect different aspects of the stress experience with (self) hypnosis. Some appropriate induction strategies will be reviewed and suggestions, as  well as imagery to reduce stress or strain. As sleep is often impaired in people suffering from stress, you get some sleep improving hypnosis methods. You become familiar with methods to review past experiences and to understand how you and your patients get stressed in some situations. You learn the power of now, and how moment-to- moment awareness helps to reduce stress. As emotions are closely related to the stress  experience, they deserve  special attention in hypnosis. With inner creativity fostered in hypnosis people get access to inner resources and creativity to deal better with  stressors in the future. In preparing for future confrontations with upcoming stress people can explore new behaviours and attitudes which can be tried out in a safe and effective way, as creating “memories of the  future”. Practicing what has been learned, perhaps makes you and your patients embrace stress as a friend for life. Nicole Ruysschaert M.D., Psychiatrist. After her training in medicine and specialisation is psychiatry, she worked in a mental health centre and a crisis intervention centre. Simultaneously she started a private practice. Immediately after her behaviour therapy training, she took hypnosis training and was invited to join the board of the Flemish Hypnosis Society where she organised the trainings, was president for 6 years and now is taking care of the Public Relations. She is trainer and supervisor in the society. She is ESH second vice president.

Over the years, she worked with hypnosis for a variety of problems, like (posttraumatic) stress and stress related disorders (burnout, CFS, fibromyalgia), (phobic)anxiety, performance improvement, pain, psychosomatics, functional syndromes, smoking cessation, social anxiety. Besides individual therapy, she has a lot of experience with group therapy training in private practice and for European institutions (stress) and time management, self-hypnosis and assertiveness training). Since her training in EMDR she experienced how both therapy methods can ‘learn’ from each other and how she consequently could fine-tune her work. She is ESH Newsletter editor, and ISH COR representative for her society. She believes that the additional work, is a source of energy, rewarding itself by the many contacts and friendships it entails.
