BSMDH (Scotland) holds regular meetings, lectures and workshops. (Several members also hold regular case and technique discussion meetings. Email mail@bsmdh-scot.com to find out when and where the closest meeting would be for you.)

The society also offers training for professionals who wish to learn more about the application of hypnosis within their field. These courses are well attended by both newcomers to hypnosis and also by those who have had previous experiences and wish a “refresher”.

1045am: Council Meeting.

12noon- Lunch (included in course fee)

145pm-5pm: REGRESSION by Dr Hetty MacKinnon.

For effective treatment in our medical and dental work it is important to make a diagnosis. Similarly to be effective in Hypnotherapy you need to identify the true cause of your patient’s problem and in the majority of cases only their unconscious mind knows that. However with regression, done properly, we are able to identify that incident. The majority of phobias fall into this category as do many behavioural problems. Today you will be taught a most efficient method for complete resolution in these cases.

SATURDAY EVENING AT 730pm - SOCIETY DINNER

Sunday 3rd February 2008

930am-330pm

The USE of LANGUAGE for EFFECTIVE HYPNOTHERPY

by Norman Vaughton

Norman worked for many years with Ernest Rossi who is held in very high repect for his excellent research work in relation to hypnotherapy (author of “Mind-Body Therapy”). They are both interested in the effects of the language used to achieve a successful outcome from treatments. I can assure you that this session will be of great value in achieving excellent communication with our patients and better results. When I attended a course recently where Norman was teaching I decided that we just had to have him at BSMDH-Scotland. This is a “Must-Attend” ourse for improving your skills.

NB

The Saturday course is only applicable to Society members or those with training in Hypnotherapy.

The Sunday course is open to colleagues, relations and friends interested in communication. To those of us in practice, it will improve our hypnotherapy skills, we shall find it easier to communicate with both our patients and everyone else personally, business wise and socially. Norman is a superb teacher and this is a fascinating subject.

BSMDH (Scotland) Father’s ‘G’day’ Workshop!

9am-5pm ROSS HALL HOSPITAL, GLASGOW

with renowned Australian dentist DR JAMES M. AULD.

"Naturalistic Utilisation of Hypnosis in Dental Practice" or

"How to Make Your Patients Love You Even More!"

DENTAL CPDA APPROVED= 7 HOURS (2 SESSIONS)

This workshop assumes little or no prior experience with indirect hypnotic techniques, although those with experience will also benefit by attending. Hear about useful experiences from 38 years of general practice. The fundamental principles underlying indirect trance induction will be discussed to provide a better understanding of the techniques to be presented, as will issues of spontaneous trance, informed consent and resistance.

Two rapid induction techniques eminently suited to the dental situation will be demonstrated, with delegates having ample opportunity to practice with supervision.

The structure of indirect verbal inductions will be presented, covering language forms, dissociation through association, and the structure of confusion. This will be related to the format of a typical hypnosis session, and demonstrated if appropriate.

Ways of dealing with typical dental problems will be discussed, with emphasis on pain. The nature of pain and hypnotic interventions suited to incorporation in daily practice will be covered. I will discuss my personal experiences with post-surgical pain management and relate this to ways delegates can manage their personal pain.

A further practice session can be included here, incorporating deepening techniques and suggestions for pain management, or this can be structured as a group induction session if the group wishes.

This is a workshop format, and as much time as possible will be devoted to practising the techniques discussed and demonstrated.

The learning outcomes are that participants will:

  • be able to effectively carry out two rapid induction techniques
  • be able to utilise appropriate structuring of language in indirect techniques.
  • be able to use techniques learned in pain management.

More or less emphasis can be placed on any of the above areas depending on the needs and interests of the group.

Sunday 6th November 2005: Royal Scots Club, Edinburgh.                                                                     130pm

'This meeting will be at the Royal Scots Club in 30 Abercrombie Place, Edinburgh EH3 6QE (not abercromy street as previously documented on this site and in the flyer) which is just down from queen street running paralell to it, only 5 minutes from the station. Because the speaker cannot arrive in time for a morning session the meeting will start at 1.30 and will continue until 4.20 with a break for tea and mingling. The Topic is: Brief therapy and hypnosis in a Primary Care setting. Dr Ann Williamson (www.annwilliamson.co.uk) A series of cases will be presented that demonstrate the application of brief solution oriented hypnosis in the successful treatment of phobia, panic disorder, PTSD and depression. Brief therapy facilitated by hypnosis and imagery gives clients tools which they can continue to use after formal sessions have finished. This is not only ego-strengthening for the client but also fosters independence from the therapist, who functions as a co-worker with the client rather than as an "expert". Dr Ann Williamson is a GP of thirty years standing who uses hypnosis and brief therapy both formally and informally with many of her patients. She trained in hypnosis in 1990 and gained Accreditation by the British Society of Medical & Dental Hypnosis in 1995. She trained in Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP), becoming a Certified Practitioner in NLP in 1997 and a Master Practitioner in 1998. She has also attended workshops on Brief Therapy run by Bill O'Hanlon, Danie Beaulieu and Steve De-Shazer. She is currently Chairman of the British Society of Medical & Dental Hypnosis and Honorary National Secretary for the British Society of Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis and is involved in training for both Societies. She has had several cases published in Contemporary Hypnosis and has published two books, one on Smoking Cessation and one on Anxiety Management. She has run numerous workshops on brief psychological interventions and stress management over the years both in the UK and abroad.

Dobbin (Edin)

Title: Flowing with our healing molecules: Autogenic Therapy approaches in the new age of Affective Neuroscience Ian Ross has been teaching Autogenic Therapy for over ten years in Leith. During the 1980s he became interested in the physical and mental manifestations of stress, and how these can be addressed in non-pharmacological ways. Recent developments in neuroscience have stimulated his interest in the overlap between stress, anxiety, and disturbing emotions. In November 2005 he gave the Schultz Memorial Lecture to the British Autogenic Society in London. He recently retired from General Practice, and continues to teach Autogenic Therapy at his old surgery.
